Researching Phonological Categories

Aim:

to increase familiarity with a range of terms related to phonology and with the TKT Glossary

Target Audience:

teacher trainers/candidates

Relevance to TKT:

Module 1 Part 1

Organisation:

groups then whole class

Materials needed:

TKT Glossary ; research materials
  1. Put trainees in groups and allocate to each group the name of a category related to phonology, e.g.

    consonant, vowel, diphthong
    stress
    intonation
    connected speech
    minimal pair
    rhyme

    For more examples of categories see TKT Glossary Module 1 Phonology.

  2. Ask each group to carry out research then design posters illustrating the category they have been given.

  3. The posters could then be displayed, and each group asked to give a presentation about their poster to the class.

Notes/Variations:

  • You may wish to carry out the discussions in the candidates’ first language.
