Materials needed:

Ask trainees to write a list of all the reasons they can think of why they or their students want to learn English.
Trainees compare their lists with a partner and refine them.
Trainees compare their lists in groups and refine them.
Whole class report back – the trainer should list on the board the different sources of motivation identified (e.g. usefulness of English, interest in target culture, enjoying learning, pressure/encouragement from others, feeling good about learning).
