Selection and Use of Aids

Aim:

to make trainees more familiar with the range of teaching aids and their possible uses.

Target Audience:

teacher trainers/candidates

Relevance to TKT:

Module 2 Part 2

Organisation:

whole class then pairs/groups then whole class

Materials needed:

Worksheet
  1. Trainees brainstorm a list of possible teaching aids

(e.g. whiteboard, blackboard, OHP, flashcards, tape recorder, video, realia, computer, posters, puppets, phonemic chart).

  2. The trainer hands out a copy of the worksheet with 10 different lesson aims to pairs/groups of trainees.

  3. The trainees in their pairs/groups match aids and aims – according to how they see the aids being used in the lessons.

  4. The trainees report back on and discuss their answers.

  5. Trainees tell one another about what aid they last used in class, how it helped the lesson and whether they would use it in the same way if they taught the same lesson again. If this course is taking place in a centre with access to aids that trainees haven’t used before, they could try them out.

Notes/Variations:

  • You may prefer to conduct discussions in the candidates’ first language.
  • Trainees in groups brainstorm teaching aids and aims, write them down on strips of paper and give to another group to match the aids to the aims.
