Interaction Patterns

Aim:

to increase awareness of the range of interaction patterns and their uses

Target Audience:

teachers/candidates

Relevance to TKT:

Module 3 Part 2

Organisation:

whole class then pairs then whole class

Materials needed:

possibly materials for the activities chosen
  1. Choose two general English activities e.g. an oral drill and a skills comprehension task.

  2. Ask the trainees to act as a class.

  3. Carry out one of the activities twice, each time varying the interaction pattern.

  4. Ask the trainees what effect the different interaction patterns had on their behaviour and feelings. Write the answers on the board.

  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the other activity.

  6. Write a list of different interaction patterns on the board. Ask trainees in pairs to think of examples of uses, advantages and disadvantages for each.

  7. Conduct a whole class feedback, writing answers on the board to act as a summary.

Notes/Variations:

  • You may prefer to conduct discussions in the trainees’ first language.
