Student Language in the Classroom

Aim:

to increase awareness of students’ need to learn classroom language and of the range of functions this is needed for

Target Audience:

 teacher trainers/candidates

Relevance to TKT:

Module 3 Part 1

Organisation:

individuals then pairs then whole class

Materials needed:

copies of a list of 10 functions of student classroom language
  1. Give the trainees a list of 10 functions of student classroom language.

  2. Ask the trainees in pairs to write an exponent for each function.

  3. Trainees compare exponents with the whole class while the trainer writes some of the suggested exponents for each function on the board.

  4. Discussion of whether and how to teach students exponents of classroom language, and, if so, which.

Notes/Variations:

  • You may prefer to conduct discussions in the trainees’ first language.
