Teacher Language in the Classroom

Aim:

to raise awareness of the functions of teacher talk

Target Audience:

teacher trainers/candidates

Module 3 Part 1

Organisation:

pairs then whole class

Materials needed:

TKT Glossary
  1. Trainees in pairs look at the classroom functions in the TKT Glossary Module 3 Teachers’ and learners’ language in the classroom, and decide which could be used by teachers and which by students.

  2. Trainees give example exponents of each function for teacher language.

  3. Trainees identify at what points in what kinds of lessons the teacher might use these functions.

  4. Trainees as a class watch 3 minutes of a lesson (on video or simulated) and write a list of the functions used by the teacher.

  5. Trainees compare and discuss answers.

Notes/Variations:

  • This activity could be adapted to focus on the functions of student talk by showing a video of e.g. students carrying out group work, or simulating in the training classroom students carrying out a task.
