| Answers and Discussion
Look at the discussion of the points raised by the matching task. What would you recommend as the most efficient strategies for dealing with this task?
- What did you have to do to complete the task?
This task requires you to match 5 different ways of giving feedback to students (Questions 71-75) with the reason(s) for using each way (options A-F).
The instructions show that there is one extra option which doesn’t need to be used. It is important for candidates to consider this when completing the task.
- What did you have to consider when answering?
It is important to consider the different contexts in both the items and the options. You probably had to think carefully about which options to choose and did not just choose the first possible one you saw.
Candidates must make sure they answer all the questions and shade the correct lozenge on the answer sheet.
- What did you learn about the task from reading the instructions?
The instructions explain what needs to be matched, i.e. the items (the ways a teacher gives feedback on students’ written work) and the options (the aims of the feedback). This also allows candidates to decide which area of the syllabus is being tested.
The instructions also indicate what type of matching task this is – the information ‘there is one extra option which you do not need to use’ shows candidates that this is a one-to-one matching task with a distractor. Having a distractor means that the answers cannot be found simply by pairing off all the questions and options until there are none left. A distractor makes candidates think about the answers to each question, even the last one that is left to answer.
- What area of the TKT syllabus is covered in this task?
This task covers Part 2 of TKT Module 3, which requires candidates to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and terminology related to giving feedback.
In order to test candidates’ awareness of the different areas of teaching knowledge covered by this module you may wish to do the Module 3 Overview Activity.
Complete information on the TKT syllabus can be found in the TKT Handbook.
- Was any of the language ‘teaching specific’?
Yes, ‘correction code’.
It is essential that candidates are aware of the appropriate teaching terminology for each area of the TKT syllabus.
It is important that every candidate has access to the TKT Glossary in order for them to familiarise themselves with teaching terminology.
