Answers and Discussion

Look at the discussion of the points raised by the multiple-choice task. What would you recommend as the most efficient strategies for dealing with this task?

  1. What did you have to do to complete the task?
In this task candidates have to choose the option (A, B or C) which best defines each language skill (Questions 36-40).

Candidates need to read each of the options before choosing the best definition.

Other multiple-choice tasks may require candidates to complete a sentence with a word or phrase, or select the best possible answer to a question.

  2. What did you have to consider when answering?
It is important to remember to read all of the options even if you think that the first one is correct. For example, for Question 36 you may have thought that option A was a reasonable definition of summarising until you read options B and C.

Candidates also need to be careful of 'word spots', which do not necessarily lead to the correct answer. For example, in Question 39 the word 'phrase' appears in option A, but the correct definition of 'paraphrasing' is option C.

Candidates must make sure they answer all the questions, and shade the correct lozenge on the answer sheet.

  3. What did you learn about the task from reading the instructions?
The instructions explain that the task is testing ‘language skills’, which tells the candidate which area of the syllabus is being tested.

The instructions also show that candidates are looking for the correct option. This confirms to candidates that this is a multiple-choice task and not an odd one out.

  4. What area of the TKT syllabus is covered in this task?
This task looks at Part 1 of Module 1, where candidates need to demonstrate an understanding of concepts and terminology related to language skills.

In order to test candidates awareness of the different areas of teaching knowledge covered by this module, you may wish to do the Module 1 Overview Activity

Complete information on the TKT syllabus can be found in the TKT Handbook

  5. Was any of the language ‘teaching specific’?
Most of the language in this task is teaching specific as Module 1 looks at the language skills-related terminology needed by teachers.

It is important that every candidate has access to the TKT Glossary in order for them to familiarise themselves with the appropriate terminology.
