Answers and Discussion

Look at the discussion of the points raised by the Odd One Out task. What would you recommend as the most efficient strategies for dealing with this task?

  1. What did you have to do to complete the task?
Unlike Multiple choice, in Odd One Out you have to choose the option which is not correct. In this task, for each question you had to read a stage of a lesson and the three aims and decide which aim was not appropriate.

For example, in Question 15 of this task, the lead-in stage is used by the teacher to personalise the start of the lesson and create interest in the topic. The descriptions of what the teacher does in this stage do not relate to introducing the past simple tense. This means that option B is NOT appropriate and therefore is the correct answer.

  2. What did you have to consider when answering?
Candidates should read the options carefully and not rely on 'word spots'. In Question 19, the word 'study' is in the question prompt and the word 'reading' is in option B, but option B is in fact the correct answer as developing reading comprehension is not an appropriate aim for this stage in the lesson plan.

  3. What did you learn about the task from reading the instructions?
The instructions outline the context of the stages (stages from a lesson plan about complaining), and remind candidates to mark the aim which is not appropriate.

It is very important that candidates read each instructions carefully as it provides information on the task type, what is required in order to complete the task correctly and which area of the syllabus is being covered.

  4. What area of the TKT syllabus is covered in this task?
This task covers Part 1 of Module 2 where candidates are required to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and terminology relating to identifying and selecting lesson aims.

In order to test candidates’ awareness of the different areas of teaching knowledge covered by this module, you may wish to do the Module 2 Overview Activity.

Complete information on the TKT syllabus can be found in the TKT Handbook.

  5. Was any of the language ‘teaching specific’?
Yes, ‘elicits’, ‘target language’, ‘pre-teach’, ‘gist’, ‘correcting’, ‘drilling’.

It is important that every candidate has access to the TKT Glossary in order for them to familiarise themselves with the appropriate terminology.
