Starters Speaking — Tips for Teachers

  • Explain the procedure in your students' first language and, if possible, practise it with candidates.

  • Remind the candidates that they can only speak in English during the test.

  • Do lots of practice with the candidates during class time.

  • Do activities that require the candidates to point in response to a question.

  • Tell the children that they only need to point to the correct part of the picture when they are asked questions like "Where's the monkey?" or "Where are the trees?".

  • Make sure candidates can talk about themselves confidently.

  • Make sure they know that they only need to give short answers.

  • Tell them to listen carefully to the examiner.

  • Encourage them to answer the examiner's questions.

  • Remind the candidates to say hello and goodbye and to tell the examiner when they don't understand something.
