Updated FCE and CAE set to go live in December
16 July 2008
The final sessions of the ‘old’ version of First Certificate in English and Certificate in Advanced English examinations have now taken place and preparations are under way for the first use of the updated versions of those exams in December 2008.
As part of the update to the exams, the statements of results will also be enhanced, providing greater clarity and additional information. In addition to the Grade awarded and the graphical profile showing the relative strengths and weaknesses of the candidate's performance, the enhanced statements will show a standardised score out of 100.
The move towards enhanced result information is in response to requests from teachers and other users, to give them a better understanding of exam performance. For example, a learner who achieved an ‘A’ grade at FCE will be able to check their score to see if their performance was nearer the top of the ‘A’ band, or was closer to a ‘B’. Learners together with their teacher can then use that information to decide on how much additional preparation would be needed for CAE.
New versions of the FCE and CAE handbooks, which give a paper-by-paper overview of the new tests, can be downloaded from the links below.

A series of seminars is being held worldwide which will help teachers and centres prepare for the new exams by outlining the changes and what they mean for themselves and their candidates.
