Self-study success in Brazil

Sédrik Alan da Silva English opens doors for 17 year old Sédrik Alan da Silva from Altinho, Pernambuco. After just a short period of learning English from BBC World Service radio programmes and a borrowed, locally produced textbook, Sédrik successfully passed the Preliminary English Test (PET).

The Pernambuco State Secretary of Education has granted him a scholarship to attend the most famous state school in the city so he can complete his secondary studies and pursue his chosen career in law. Sédrik also plans to move on to take the First Certificate in English (FCE).

Ken Dean, Development Manager for Cambridge ESOL, said: ‘It takes energy, commitment and a good dose of enthusiasm to learn a new language. Sédrik has demonstrated all these qualities and a lot more in teaching himself English to this level.’
